A powerful storm has wreaked havoc across Spain, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of 211 people. Valencia, one of the hardest-hit areas, suffered significant damage, prompting authorities to urge residents and tourists to stay indoors.

Mallorca Braces for Similar Storm

Following the tragedy, the Spanish National Weather Service issued a warning for Mallorca, predicting a similar storm system approaching the island. As a precautionary measure, Palma, the capital city, has temporarily closed tourist attractions, major roads, public parks, and cemeteries. Homeless individuals have also been relocated from flood-prone areas.

Palma's First Deputy Mayor, Javier Bonet, advised residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. "While we're not on red alert, it's crucial to warn the population to avoid further risks," he stated.

The storm is projected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Mallorca, with some regions potentially receiving up to a tenth of the total rainfall recorded in the UK in 2023, its 11th wettest year on record.

Emergency responders in Valencia are still searching for bodies trapped inside vehicles and buildings, while residents confront the potential loss of their homes. At least 155 deaths have been confirmed in the eastern region of Valencia.

Images from the disaster site reveal piles of debris, fallen trees, and damaged power lines. Spain's Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, expressed his grief over the loss of life, particularly those caught in their vehicles. "Tragically, there are fatalities inside several cars," he said.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer conveyed condolences and offered support to Spain. "My thoughts are with those who have lost their lives, their families, and everyone affected by the flooding in Spain. The UK stands ready to assist Spain during this difficult time."
